Ordinary Days

When asked to write about a beautiful moment for this project, I thought I had to find something extraordinary…something rare, unforgettable, worthy of being written down and shared. I have spent weeks searching my memory for the perfect moment. The longer I thought about it, the more I realized that the point isn’t to find beauty in the extraordinary moments, but to notice the beauty that exists in every ordinary day. My favorite moments live somewhere quiet. They live in winter, in the minutes just before the world wakes up. When the ground is covered in soft white snow and the sun begins to rise, the real beauty is not where the sun appears, but on the opposite horizon. The sky turns pink and stretches across the cold morning horizon. It seems as though there is never any breeze in these moments. The world is still, as if it’s holding its breath. While every sunrise is beautiful, my favorite comes on the coldest mornings, when the temperature is in the single digits, the sun is bright, the air is crisp, and the silence is loud. The cold stings, but the warmth of the sun on my face makes it not only bearable, but comforting. Everything looks fresh, and the world seems to glow as the light reflects off its white surface. It is in those still winter mornings that I find a peace I can’t seem to find anywhere else in my life. The same magic comes again at sunset, when the soft pink horizon lights up the winter sky for a few more moments. These moments never last long, but maybe that’s what makes them so special. How lucky am I to be given such beautiful moments of pure stillness and peace every single day.
